Sacrificing Wilderness for Renewables? Land Artificialization from Inadequate Spatial Planning of Wind Energy in Evvoia, Greece. Land 14(6). <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/land14061296\">https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3390\/land14061296<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a nutshell:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Evvoia island hosts 17% (823 MW) of the national wind power installed (528 wind turbines)<\/li>\n<li>Evvoia has suffered megafires with the last one burning 510 km<sup>2<\/sup> in its northern part in 2021<\/li>\n<li>The study area in the mountains of central Evvoia (average elevation of 725 m) is left intact and is of high naturalness: forest (43%), heathland and shrubs (28%), grasslands (16%), sparsely vegetated areas (10%), agricultural land and mining sites (3%).<\/li>\n<li>The study area has a pronounced wilderness character (half of the study area as roadless areas)<\/li>\n<li>A large-scale wind power project is planned in this area: 11 wind power stations with 98 wind turbines totaling 279.6 MW<\/li>\n<li>This industrial scale wind harnessing project will cause substantial natural habitat loss of 14.55 km<sup>2<\/sup>: forest loss of 6.7 km<sup>2<\/sup>, natural grassland loss of 2.68 km<sup>2<\/sup>, heathland and scrub loss of 2.44 km<sup>2<\/sup> and sparsely vegetated areas loss of 2.73 km<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<li>The project land artificialization index would be 53.112 m<sup>2<\/sup>\/MW and the estimated land take index would be 4.5 m<sup>2<\/sup>\/MWh when the global average is 1 m<sup>2<\/sup>\/MWh)<\/li>\n<li>The new artificial land generated and relevant new road network (15.27km) would result in landscape fragmentation: five times more patches of sparsely vegetated areas that would have 10% of the initial patch size and \u00a0three times more forest patches that would have 30% of their initial size<\/li>\n<li>The 20th largest roadless area of Mt Pyxarias (51.4 km<sup>2<\/sup> will be reduced by 77%) and a smaller roadless area (16.1 km<sup>2<\/sup>) will be lost<\/li>\n<li>The project intervention zone lies in ecologically sensitive zones: (a) 97% within the boundaries of the Natura 2000 site GR2420011 (31 bird species of the Birds\u2019 Directive), \u00a0(b) 97% within the \u201cNature Protection Zone\u201d suggested by the Special Environmental Study as a road-free and infrastructures-free zone of strict protection status, (c) 84% within the regional Key Biodiversity Area GR111 (Important Bird Area), \u00a0(d) 27% within a potential global Key Biodiversity Aera, (e) 64% within wilderness areas and (f) 100% within the windfarm-exclusion zone suggested by another publication<\/li>\n<li>The distribution range of 524 species overlaps with the Wind Power Stations\u2019 intervention zone: 23 species are threatened with extinction (IUCN): 2 CR (critically endangered), 6 EN (endangered), 14 VU (vulnerable). The polygons covered a small part of their global distribution range.
