She has been awarded the highest level of certification in hoverfly species identification under the European EPIC-Fly programme.<\/p>\n<h2>But what are hoverflies, and why do they matter?<\/h2>\n<p>Hoverflies (family Syrphidae, order Diptera) are flies that are often mistaken for bees or wasps, as many species mimic them in color and shape \u2013 a clever defense mechanism against predators. <strong>More than 900 species have been recorded in Europe, and 457 species are known from Greece to date!<\/strong> Adults feed on nectar and pollen and, after bees, are considered among the most important pollinators of wild plants and crops. The larvae of many species feed on aphids, contributing to the natural control of crop pests, while others play a role in the decomposition of organic matter. Hoverflies live in almost all terrestrial habitats \u2013 meadows, forests and especially old-growth forests with decaying wood, wetlands, Mediterranean scrublands, fields and gardens \u2013 and, owing to the diverse requirements of their larvae, they are excellent bioindicators of environmental quality. Identifying them to species level, however, is a major challenge and requires specialized training.<\/p>\n<h2>Why do we need to monitor their populations in Greece?<\/h2>\n<p>The EU Nature Restoration Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2024\/1991), which entered into force in August 2024, sets for the first time a binding target for pollinators: Member States must improve pollinator diversity and <strong>reverse the decline of pollinator populations<\/strong> by 2030 at the latest and, thereafter, achieve an increasing trend, measured at least every six years, until satisfactory levels are reached. The Regulation also requires Member States to monitor the abundance and diversity of pollinators using a common, science-based method, which the European Commission adopted in September 2025.<\/p>\n<p>This method is the <strong>EU Pollinator Monitoring Scheme (EU-PoMS)<\/strong>: a common, standardized programme of annual data collection on wild pollinators \u2013 bees, hoverflies, butterflies and moths \u2013 across all Member States, which makes it possible to assess their population trends and the effectiveness of restoration measures. In Greece, <strong>monitoring is expected to start in 2027 at 80 sites<\/strong> across the country.<\/p>\n<h2>A Europe-wide effort to train young entomologists<\/h2>\n<p>Implementing EU-PoMS requires trained para-taxonomists in every country; this is why the European Commission funds the EPIC (European Pollinator Identification Courses) training programmes for bees (<strong>EPIC-Bee<\/strong>), hoverflies (<strong>EPIC-Fly<\/strong>, coordinated by the University of Alicante, Spain) and butterflies (<strong>EPIC-Butterfly<\/strong>). In Greece, new para-taxonomists are being trained in bees, under the coordination of the University of the Aegean, and in butterflies, under the coordination of the University of Ioannina (BCL).<\/p>\n<h2>The new hoverfly experts in Greece and Cyprus<\/h2>\n<p>Over the past year, four young scientists from Greece and Cyprus have worked hard on identifying the species of this group and have successfully certified their knowledge through EPIC-Fly (12\/2025\u201310\/2026). Important research on this group has been carried out at the University of the Aegean, where many other scientists have previously gained taxonomic expertise and have related published work. The four entomologists certified in hoverflies are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Konstantina Nasiou<\/strong> \u2013 Level 5 (Integrative)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Io Kazantzidou<\/strong> \u2013 Level 3 (Intermediate II)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Savvas Zafeiriou<\/strong> \u2013 Level 3 (Intermediate II)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Elli Tzirkalli (Cyprus)<\/strong> \u2013 Level 2 (Intermediate I)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>EPIC-Fly certification levels:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Level 1 \u2013 Basic:<\/strong> identification of the genera and common hoverfly species of the country.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Level 2 \u2013 Intermediate I:<\/strong> species-level identification of hoverflies using dichotomous keys, in the laboratory and in the field.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Level 3 \u2013 Intermediate II:<\/strong> in-depth species identification; participants can identify at least 70% of the species in their country.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Level 4 \u2013 Advanced:<\/strong> identification of taxonomically challenging, species-rich genera (e.g. <em>Sphaerophoria<\/em>, <em>Platycheirus<\/em>, <em>Merodon<\/em>, <em>Eumerus<\/em>, <em>Cheilosia<\/em>) and training of trainers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Level 5 \u2013 Integrative:<\/strong> integrative taxonomy, combining molecular and morphological data with wing geometric morphometrics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Thanks to the wonderful training team<\/h2>\n<p>We warmly thank the <strong>University of Novi Sad, Serbia<\/strong>, and the EPIC-Fly tutors \u2013 Prof. Ante Vuji\u0107, Prof. Sne\u017eana Radenkovi\u0107, Prof. Mihajla Djan, Asst.
